I like alternative histories, it is a completely unmined field of novel entertainment, if done right. This one is done terribly wrong.

Stephen Baxter has good premise and an interesting tale, but there are some plotting problems that keep the novel from rising to a four star. What began in the first novel, Proxima, as a tale of forced settlement of Earth's nearest interstellar neighbor becomes in the second installment a confused tale of alternate realities.

In many aspects, Ultima takes what we got in Proxima and elevates it to the next level. The adventure twists, turns, and comes full circle.
